Dog-Friendly Holidays in Southwest England

Devon, Cornwall and the Southwest of England are some of the most pet-friendly areas in the UK with plenty of things to see and do. Some beaches don’t allow dogs on the beach between Easter and October 1 (look for signposts) but there are plenty of dog-friendly beaches within easy reach of your chosen log cabin. If you’re staying near Newquay, Great Western Beach allows dogs onto the golden sands all year round. The waves are slightly calmer than better-known Fistral Beach, but still offer great surfing, swimming and watersports.

Bude is another top destination for pet-friendly family holidays with the perfect sand for digging deep holes! Blackrock Beach at the south end of Widemouth Bay welcomes dogs all year round and has good parking, a beach cafe, lifeguards and equipment hire.

This log cabin is one of four, Scandanavian-style lodges on this lovely site in the heart of the Cornish countryside. All the lodges are secluded and south facing, with lots of sunlight and beautiful views over the nearby river and green fields.

Guests can while away the hours on their private decking area, or spend a leisurely morning enjoying a spot of fishing in one of the two onsite coarse fishing ponds, which are well stocked with roach, bream and carp.

On Cornwall’s South Coast, Downderry Beach has flat, easy access from the car park and is perfect for long walks in all seasons. Neighbouring Whitsand Bay stretches for four miles at low tide and the firm sands are always popular with dog owners. Traffic-free walks with dogs include the South West Coast Path (all 630 miles of it!), the Camel Trail and the Tarka Trail.

Further inland, Bodmin Moor, Exmoor and Dartmoor National Park offer the perfect excuse for long walks in fresh air with plenty of exciting smells. Dogs must be kept on a lead from 1st March to 31st July to protect ground-nesting birds, newborn lambs and foals of wild ponies.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek offers a fun day out for all ages and welcomes dogs on leads. The Cornish Cyder Farm near Truro also welcomes dogs.
